The Digital Bow: Exploring Digital Presence for Indigenous Community-based Tourism in Brazil

“The Digital Bow: Exploring Digital Presence for Indigenous Community-based Tourism in Brazil.”

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, we delved into the world of digital presence as a powerful tool for indigenous tourism.

Our research sheds light on recent digital movements among different indigenous ethnicities in Brazil, understanding tourism as a tool for cultural preservation, rejecting stereotyping and emphasizing cultural knowledge exchange. Digital presence proved powerful for creating networks, raising awareness, and establishing cultural and heritage tourism approaches in community-based tourism.

We worked with the metaphor of “digital bow”, especially for the younger generation in these communities. It represents a tool for resistance against cultural erosion and a means to raise awareness about their heritage and land rights. The research showed how the digital bow also bring opportunities for relationships with the government, visitors, and themselves, amplifying their voices and increasing visibility in line with their values.
