Co-creating empowerment through storytelling and photovoice – UGANDA

The Uganda project is a partnership with two NGOs – HealthNest Uganda and Hope for Youth Uganda

The objectives of the project are:

ONE:

To discover Uganda through the eyes of its people, establishing a long-term collaboration with Health Nest Uganda, Hope for Youth Uganda as well as the Nkumba University in order to generate collaborative knowledge among all parties.

TWO:

To set up an intervention with the youth of Uganda. With this intervention we are trying to motivate the youth to realize their strengths and potential. In this intervention we will use the following tools, photovoice, storytelling, appreciative- and strength-based approach and co-creation. With these tools we hope to co-create empowerment with the youth.

THREE:

Inviting different ways to look at Africa – Uganda –  a more positive way. By creating a video out of our intervention that describes and illustrate the stories of the youth in an appreciative manner can help the NGO’s spread out their message and raise financial support towards many projects.

FOUR:

At the end we would like to share the stories of the youth in an exhibition, where they get the change to display their pictures while sharing their stories and  meanings behind their picture. The exhibition is a great opportunity for the youth to express their perspectives, values and desires.

Our perspectives on this intervention:

We embrace the perspective that life is multifaceted, polysemic and the world is a complex system of people coordinating their activities. Saying that, there are many ways to give meaning to life but sometimes the dominant discourses seems to prevail. Appreciative approaches and strength-based approaches aim at raising other voices that might not be heard or noticed. Focusing on enlightening the positive aspects of a situation, new realities and possibilities might be imaginable. With a social constructionist frame of co-creating better worlds we are interested in exploring what are the positive stories that live in the world of youth in Uganda? We want to generate stories that go beyond poverty, violence, and diseases. We believe that there are other voices that should be heard. What is the beauty of Uganda?

We are embracing the co-learning perspective in which we will generate a safe and engaging environment to learn from each other.

Our methods:

Storytelling

The methods of storytelling aims to collect alternative stories, different perspectives and showing (daily) life. At the same time also allowing the silent voices to express themselves and be heard. Storytelling is a powerful source of inspiration, understanding and education. It helps people to relate with one another and make sense of the world.  The stories are collected by using an appreciative, strength-based approach, that focuses on the positive aspect and abilities of the individuals and the situation.

Photovoice

It is a taylor-made approach embracing the context of a research/Intervention articulated with the needs of participants. It builds on the power and potential of photography as a tool that enables and encourages participants to be creative, reflective on the topic and imagine alternative futures.

Video storytelling
